Beyond YOUR Fiery Ordeal – Acts 18:9-17

Dear Friends – Don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you.  Instead, be very glad – for these trials make you partners with Christ in His suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing His glory when it is revealed to all the world.  1st Peter 4:12-13

What About Spiritual Warfare?

I just got back from Richmond, California (slightly north of Oakland/Berkeley). There is a ministry called “Time to Revive” led by Kyle Lance Martin, out of Dallas, that invited me to come and pray with them for revival in Richmond.
Richmond has a reputation for being violent; some say it is one of the most crime infested towns in CA. Actually, as I was making my way around town, I found it to be a little more hospitable than the way it was when I was a teenager growing up in the Bay Area. Back then, I was continually advised to “stay out of Richmond” and if you have to get to Marin County and you are forced to use the bridge don’t stop or look back, they may be gaining on you.”
The whole time I was with this young team, I kept waxing nostalgic, thinking about my earliest experiences as a new believer being discipled at His Way in Concord, CA circa 1973. We were all riding the wave of the “Jesus Movement” back then. People were coming to Christ right and left. It was a powerful season on the West Coast; a near revival. His Way was focusing on evangelism, and on the weekends we were on Broadway in North Beach, San Francisco sharing the Gospel with Swedish sailors, prostitutes, street people, LSD manufacturers, the barkers (the guys calling the tourists into the topless places), and gawking tourists of every stripe from every place on the map. It was in the midst of this swirling menagerie, that God called me to His full time work.

Meanwhile, Kyle’s team is doing virtually the same thing His Way were doing, but 40 years later.
So yesterday, a few of us were standing outside “Green Pastures” Church on Chesley Ave. in the heart of Richmond. It’s about 9 am; we are gearing up to do street ministry, but can’t seem to get organized. God had His reasons for delaying us. I see a woman pushing a shopping cart loaded with junk coming straight down the middle of the street toward us. She looks to be about 25 years old, but she’s been through it. She is missing her right arm and her exposed midriff sports a ghastly two inch deep wound; her sandaled feet appeared to be infected, my imagination was saying, “she must have survived something horrendous!” A few of the young team members go out and get her to slow down for prayer. She is a bit shy, but she complies and they call me over to pray for this poor creature. Her name is Laureyna. We pray and she shudders. I immediately felt someone else was here…in her; a demonic presence?

In those early days with His Way, I had seen a number of possessions. The Elders handled those situations and we younger Christians would watch and learn. It was such a common thing that it seemed normal. Later on, in the role of Elder and on rare occasion, I was dealing with the demonic myself. I never felt very successful in this dimension of ministry and often wondered if I was just fooling myself and simply dealing with mental illness. The one distinguishing factor in this kind of ministry that was most convincing to me of the demonic was the presence of “enmity”. When you are dealing with the mentally ill, you don’t have any fear or sense of things being un-natural, you are dealing with “illness” not toxic, supernatural spirituality; but when you are dealing with the demonic, there is an abiding sense of “unnatural” and that God given enmity kicks in. I was picking this up with Laureyna. Besides, she was articulate and reasonable. No sign of any mental disturbance really.
She went into the church to use the restroom. When she came out, Kyle and Gary Bohn took up where I left off, but with more intention. Kyle addressed the demon. What is your name? The answer? Chucho. How many are with you? 40 or 50.
So they began to pray and cast out the demons. “Is Chucho gone?, Kyle asked Laureyna”. Yes. Was she lying? Only God knows what the results were of these prayers and commands.

But there was a new dynamic that we all noticed: Laureyna, who was half naked when she walked up, had suddenly become modest. She wanted to cover herself up. Was this evidence of some kind of spiritual change?
Gary encouraged her to come back at
7pm for the worship.
A few hours later, I was flying back to Phoenix and driving north to Sedona. Conclusions? We are at war. The devil is still trying his best to destroy lives. He knows his time is short, so in these last days he is seeking to do as much damage as he can.
We counter him with the new and abundant life of
Jesus Christ! Let’s not forget what the last page of the Bible says: Christ wins and we win too!
